Are you a skilled tradesperson with proven leadership skills and interested in working outdoors within a provincial park setting?

If so, come join the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks at Pancake Bay Provincial Park and contribute to the protection of the area's biodiversity as well as promote exploration of the natural and cultural heritage of Ontario.

Located on the shore of Lake Superior, Pancake Bay Provincial Park offers 3 km of sand beach and Caribbean blue water. The park offers many different skilled trails including the Lookout Trail, the trail leads through a lush forest and opportunities to view local wildlife. From the Lookout Trail viewing platform, visitors have an excellent panoramic view of Lake Superior. This stretch of Lake Superior is known as the “graveyard of the Great Lakes” where the famed Edmund Fitzgerald sank in the fierce November gale of 1975. The park is located on the historic paddling route of the Voyageur as the bay would provide shelter as they voyaged onto Fort William. The park offers many different styles of camping for everyone such as, large RV sites, car camping, yurts and a rustic cabin.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• provide group leadership for a variety of technical and operational duties as well as monitoring responsibilities for the successful day-to-day operation of the park
• assist with resource management projects
• ensure facilities and equipment are properly maintained
• perform administrative duties such as correspondence, ordering equipment and purchasing supplies
• carry out routine facility inspections, as well as ensure their normal operations
• perform a variety of skilled trades duties associated with construction, repair, maintenance and operation of the park
• provide monitoring, training and group leadership duties for the park maintenance program, staff and students

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have the ability to be designated as Park Warden and meet and maintain the ministry certification criteria and standards in Use of Force training.
• You have the ability to obtain a valid First Aid Certificate.
• You have a valid class “G” driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
• You are able to work shifts, weekends and holiday as required.
• You have the ability to take chainsaw operator training.
• You have have the ability to obtain a small drinking water systems operator's certificate.

Technical knowledge:

• working knowledge of resource management principles, policies and practices applicable to parks
• knowledge of parks programs, services and operating regulations and demonstrated ability to interpret, apply and enforce relevant acts and regulations
• possess a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• knowledge of purchasing and accounting policies, procedures and best business practices
• knowledge of park emergency plans, evacuation plans, and procedures

Equipment and building operation and maintenance:

• knowledge of semi-skilled tasks associated with skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, automotive and HVAC
• knowledge of the operation and maintenance of provincial park facilities and support services, such as campsites, comfort stations, hydro, gas, solar electric generation and propane appliances
• knowledge of water and sewage systems operation and maintenance as per Ministry of the Environment and Health standards
• knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of powered equipment, such as chainsaws, brush cutters, tractors, chlorinating systems, lawnmowers, boats and small hand tools
• ability to work from simple blueprints, specifications, wiring diagrams, shop drawings, operating and code (i.e. electrical, plumbing, building) manuals

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• interpersonal skills to interact effectively with staff, students and visitors and to work as part of a team
• communication skills to produce reports and correspondence

Leadership skills:

• demonstrated leadership skills to provide guidance to staff, accept responsibility and in making decisions
• ability to provide training and group leadership to a seasonal workforce of fixed-term staff and students

Independence and organizational skills:

• organizational skills and the ability to work independently and follow and carry out instructions

Computer proficiency:

• ability to use personal computers including word processing, record keeping, electronic mail and internet software applications
